Good-Bye Chihuahua...For Now
Monday, September 15, 2014
Our Elder began by telling me that he was informed on Sunday of a transfer to take place for him tomorrow (Tuesday). I am aware a group of Elders left the M.T.C. this morning and they are all "Chihuahua bound." The Mexico Chihuahua mission is receiving 18 missionaries today. He wanted to spend his email time today getting more talks on his USB thumb drive.
He also told me the bites on his legs are from mosquitoes. He said they were just as bad last year. He says they think his blood must be "candy."
The family who had the birthday cake for him was the Reza family. He has become very close to their family and says he has helped them a lot. They are always giving him food and he spent yesterday saying good-bye to them.
Questions and Answers:
1. How is Elder Garibay? Elder Garibay is doing good. He really is working and came to the mission super prepared. We have already been preparing our area for one of us to leave, so he knows what he needs to do.
2. Tell me some things which are "new" about you. Think about this one and tell us some things we don't know. Anything you want... I have changes to who knows where, and I have to be shaving every day now; otherwise, I get "Regañado" or "chastized." I don't know. Nothing, really, is that new. I think it will be better to answer that question next week.
3. Tell me some things you have "learned" on your mission which have changed you. I wouldn't say that I have changed all that much, but there are a lot of things that the mission teaches you about day to day life experience. I think the thing that has changed the most is my knowledge about the Gospel. I never really understood it before; I just believed in God and Jesus Christ, but I never learned what it meant to apply it to my life. I'm sure you can note the change in me through my emails, but it will be even more drastic when I return.
4. I want to hear about the people you are working with. Can I answer that next week? I left the names of all the people I want to remember from Villa Juárez in the house. I have a lot of people that I really just love here, as well as in Camargo, and a little in Delicias.
5. Tell us some of the fun, or funny, things you have been up to. We are still at our scare pranks. It's probably the funnest thing we do. We have filmed it a lot, but we have to delete them because most of the time we are in garments.
6. Tell us of an awesome experience, or awesome experiences, that will lift us up and inspire us; some that you have had, or that might have happened that you heard about. Well...the most awesome experience from Villa Juarez that I have had...well, I don't know, but the most awesome family that we have helped here has been the Reza family. They are awesome and I really want to stay in touch with them.

Presidente,
No quiero salir entonces estoy haciendo algo correcto.

President,
I have enjoyed this week. We have had many people who need a lot of help. I feel like my work has been good in this area. I don’t want to leave them, and I enjoy doing something right.
We have a woman that is called Sarai. She is an inactive member that is becoming active. We had a visit with her, and her husband was there. Her husband has many problems and has lost her trust forever. He still wants to be with her but doesn't have a reason. He followed her to Church and we had to go back to their house with her so she wouldn't be alone with him. Her family was at home and everything was good.
We found some new families as well. We are having success and preparing our area very well.
Thank you very much, President, for the time that I have had here in Villa Juarez. I have many people that I love and I hope the best for them.

We Had Meetings This Week -- Not Much To Report
Monday, September 8, 2014
Dear Family,
Not much this week. We had a lot of meetings, and we had to enter the house early yesterday because of the rain. People died yesterday in the floods.
Love you,

Gracias Presidente,

Thank you very much for your training. I love to hear more about what I am studying during my study time right now. The whole time I was thinking on the other question I read: "Wilt thou be made whole?" from John 5 (John 5:6). I have helped a few people "act" and "not wait" -- to be "proactive" and "act," not "react."

Our Elder Turns 20 Years Old!!!
Monday, September 1, 2014
Dear Family,
Our mission had 154 baptisms this month, which is the highest our mission has had in one month, ever.
Everything is good. It was just a relaxing day yesterday (his birthday, Aug.31). We went to Stake Conference, and then the family that signed up to feed us brought the food to the house, so we ate there. Elder Garibay and I played chess, even though we aren’t allowed to, but we did it in our free time so I don’t think it is that big of a problem. I won 6 out of 8 games. The reason we can’t play any type of game anymore is because there were Elders gambling and stuff.
I didn’t get your second birthday package yet. I think I will today, though, because we have a Zone Activity.
They gave all of the August birthday cakes out at the beginning of August. I lost the picture of the cake when my camera got erased. I’m also a little rushed for time today because I am copying a video and all sorts of stuff, so I’m not sure if I will be able to even send more stuff. I have a lot of talks that I am printing out today that I can share with you all.
* There is one called “Safety for the Soul” by Elder Holland.
* Another is “Come Join With Us” by Pres. Uchtdorf.
* Another is “You Can Do It Now” by Uchtdorf.
* Another is “The Cost And Blessings Of Discipleship” by Holland.
* And one by Eyring called “Act In All Diligence.”
Love,
-Elder Ian Hansgen
***Below is a photo tribute to our Elder, who did not send any pictures this week. Here are "20" pictures, all of my son who happened to turn "20" years old on Sunday, August 31, 2014.***
Enjoy!!!

A Very Choice Baptism
Monday, August 25, 2014
Dear Family,
I’m doing good. I just have had a ton of people to write this week. I had 17 emails, but I think 6 or 7 were from you. Ha-ha.
This whole “write once a week” is tough when you have to talk about what happened the past week, and then talk about what is going to happen the next week. I didn’t even realize that my birthday was this week until someone told me it is on Sunday. I have been super busy with the baptism this past week and my mind is still a little scattered around.
I don’t have a run-down of this past week because it was all focused in on the baptism.
Well, something funny was that we are having a competition of who can scare the other Elder the most. It’s going pretty good so far. I got Elder Peralta two times, and he got me once on camera. I’ll tell you how it goes.
I got to go now. Bye.
Love,
-Elder Hansgen

Presidente,
Muchas gracias presidente.

This week we baptized the 14-year-old girl. She has felt the Spirit more strongly than any other person I have met in all of my life. We are going to continue to visit her to strengthen her and her family and see if we can baptize the family.
This was our focus during the week. We found an old investigator as well, but her schedule does not allow her to come to Church. She is a sure baptism if we can help her find a different job. Her mother was baptized one year ago, but she went inactive, and we are helping her as well.
This week we aren't going to baptize or confirm anyone, so our plan is to prepare for September and October. We have a lot of new people to go and visit, and our week is planned out through the evenings.
Thank you very much, President.

It's All About "Conversion"
Monday, August 18, 2014
Dear Family,
Tuesday- I went on divisions with our Zone Leader, Elder Castro, and we visited a ton of people. That was the day we finally contacted Karina and her mom. They are super awesome. The mom is an inactive member and she wants to quit smoking. If we can get her to quit smoking, her daughter will get baptized.
Wednesday- We talked to this old lady, that is the mother of some members, to try and help her realize what she is missing in life. She is super hard-hearted and hard-headed. She contradicts herself and basically just wants to stay in contention with us.
Thursday- We taught some members Preach My Gospel, and had a point system in between them to see who could teach the most points from the lesson.
Friday- Nothing too big this day. We taught the Reza family again, and we are helping them with all of the problems they are having as a family. It all has to do with the Dad working in the United States.
Saturday- We saw Elder Pieper and Brother Ridd. Their talks were really good. They talked about what I have been saying for a long time, which is we need to “convert” not “baptize.”
Sunday- We had 4 investigators, and over 9 less-active members that we are visiting, attend church.
Questions and Answers:
1. Who are the people you are working with right now? Please tell me all about them.
Luzelena, who is the 14-year-old girl (who is pregnant) that we are going to baptize, the Castillo-Rodriguez family, the Reza family (the 11 year old we baptized), Rosario and her daughter Karina. We are basically working with a bunch of new people.
2. Anything “funny” happen???
Elder Reynolds and I were crossing the street on Sunday and two busses passed us on both sides while we were stuck in-between.
3. Anything “unbelievable” happen???
We had over 9 less-active members attend church, and 4 investigators.
4. What is the most “amazing” thing about being a missionary?
Sharing what the Lord is teaching me to others.
I'm sorry, Mom, I have to get going now. I had a lot of people write me this week and I wanted to catch up on my emails with everyone. I'll talk to you next week and we will see if the WiFi (in my new camera) works in the Church to send photos. Bye.

Querido Presidente,

It Was A "Utah" Baptism!
Monday, August 4, 2014
Dear Mom,
I’m glad you told me of all the experiences that happened while you all went up to Bear Lake. You are going to really be surprised when you see the letter that I just sent you this morning. I’ll let it be a surprise, but it is what I have been studying the past couple of weeks. Hope that you all enjoy it.
Everything is fine now in our area. We didn’t have changes (transfers), but Elder Brown has them tomorrow. He is the only one that is leaving, so we will have a new person in the house this Tuesday.
The baptism went very well. The little girl’s entire family came. It was almost like a Utah baptism, ha-ha! We had to change rooms twice to be able to fit everyone in, and so they could all have a seat.
Basically, our entire week was spent focused on them. We are activating the family and it’s super awesome because they all had interviews with the Bishop. The grandma (who is only 2 years older than you, Mom) is preparing to go to the Temple in November and could only cry telling us about how it has been a lifelong dream to go. She had already given up on the idea of ever going.
The trials that we went through two weeks ago have passed, and we came out on top against Satan, so everything is back to normal.
I can’t wait until you get that letter, though. You have to email me when you get it. Check the date and everything. I have been studying that topic for about a month now.
To answer Aneeqa, my favorite food to eat in Mexico is homemade food -- that is the only way to have real Mexican; and my favorite food is anything that you can eat with tortillas. They make a lot of meats and stuff that they eat with rice and beans.
Love,
-Elder Ian Hansgen
Dear Dad,
Everything is going great. I have been practicing a ton with the tops. I might need to buy new ones next Summer because the point is all worn down. I can throw it into my hand like a pro now. It’s sweet. I never got into throwing it on other tops, though. They break easier that way. We would see whose would spin the longest, though, and that’s why they are all worn down (from the cement).
Mom told me a whole lot went down on the vacation that made it kind of different; like the weather and all the problems that happened. I wrote a letter and put personalized Tazos in it for all of you. You all get four each, and they are pretty cool. I think you will like the ones I got you.
We baptized this week and we still get to stay here and work, so everything is good here. I’ll talk to you next week. Love you.

Dear Mom,
I’m glad you told me of all the experiences that happened while you all went up to Bear Lake.

Rushed For Time This Week -- Bought A New Camera
Monday, July 28, 2014
Dear Family,
Last week my memory was deleted and I lost all the photos I had; then my camera died, so I couldn't take any photos, but that's alright because the baptism didn't happen (more details next week). We haven't seen them in a while and our area has taken a huge spiritual blow from Satan; that's about the best way I can describe it. It's alright, though, because we are tough and can handle it.
We are focused on the baptism that will happen this next Saturday, on your birthday, and it will be very good because I have a new camera.
I will have a lot more to say next week, but I'll talk to you all later. We are sharing a computer, so I have half the time that I normally would have, but it's because we are short on time for going to Centro to buy a camera.
I'm really glad that you told Melany to write me. I have been trying to get a hold of her for a long time. I have been wanting to talk to her for a while.
See you next week. I'll have more details next Monday.
Love,
-Elder Ian Hansgen
We Are Led By The Spirit
Monday, July 21, 2014
Dear Family,
We are a little early now (today). I lost my cable to my camera. Someone took it from the Cyber (café) when I left last week, so I can’t charge my camera or upload photos. I have been thinking of just getting a new camera or something because I have had this one for a while. What should I do? Should I buy a cable, or a new camera?
Really quickly, with the time I have (left), I want to write about some of the stuff that has been happening. We are super good at following the Spirit and finding inactive members that don’t show up in the Ward’s registry. We have found over 4 (four) families now that are less-active, or inactive, that also have nonmembers we are teaching. We are working a lot with the members and teaching them how to teach. We have set up a baptism this Saturday, the 26th, for 3 (three) people, and also one on the 2nd, which is your birthday. If everything goes well, we will have some baptisms to report coming up.
I have to go now. I think the computer just erased all the photos I had on my memory card...ugh. I’ll go look for a camera today.
Love,
-Elder Ian Hansgen

The Work Continues:
Monday, July 14, 2014
Dear Family,
I just got all done writing people; it was crazy.
We haven’t really done much this week. We had a few meetings with President Chavez and really just worked. I don’t have much for this week. I should next week, though. I only have three minutes left.
Please tell everyone I am already one year out and only have one left.

Presidente,

Basically, we are working with the families that we have that are "part-member" families. Many less-actives are returning to the Chapel now and we are hoping that we can still fulfill that need. The members are helping us a lot and we are grateful for this.
We had inactives, and an investigator, that we weren't expecting to attend church that came. It was a great feeling when we saw their faces in church.
Thank you very much for your help, President, and also for your training.

We Are Growing!!!

Dear Family,
Questions and Answers:
1. (This is the most important, too...). What can we send to you for your Birthday??? I really have been thinking about this one......I don’t have much room in my bags so what if I just got some cool stuff together (its correct this time....haha) and send it all to you guys? You really seemed to like it a lot when I sent you the package, so can I send one for the Family?
2. Do you have any pictures to send to me today? More importantly, could you please send me a picture of you??? I do have pictures but I don’t have the cable. If I can figure out a way to send them I will.
3. Please tell me how your "Sabbath Day" guy is doing. Same as always -- ready to listen, but not to act.
4. Who lives in your house with you now? Elder Garibay, Elder Brown, and Elder Reynolds.
5. Do you remember the medication "boxes" I made for you? Which medicines have you used so far? Do you need "more" of any??? I have only used a tiny bit of the medications -- Mucinex, Aleve, and the migraine one for another Elder. I opened up some of the stuff for chaffing, too, but nothing else.
6. Have you been bitten in your leg (or anywhere else) at all? No. The dogs have never been able to actually bite us. They have tried but their coordination is horrible.
7. This is a really, really silly one... Just as an FYI, the spelling of the word "together" is t-o-g-e-t-h-e-r (not togeather or togather). I think you have picked up on this incorrect spelling from your Dad. He always adds that letter "a" in there for some reason. Anyway, there is not a letter "a" in the word together. I know you are fully immersed in Spanish now and English is just a foreign language to you. There are all kinds of words which you are spelling incorrectly now, and you should be, but this one is pretty consistent, so just chalk this up to a little grammar/spelling lesson today. :) "We can hardly wait to be together again." Sometimes I have just given up on grammar. That is pretty funny though. It’s a lot harder than you think writing in English. I talk all the time to Elder Brown and Reynolds in English to help Elder Garibay learn English.
8. Tell me something really funny that has happened to you in the last week or two. Elder Brown had his birthday and we face-caked him. We were with some members eating and they had cake for him and started chanting "Mordida," or little bite, so he went in to bite it and they pushed him into the cake.
9. Tell me something that was "incredible" which has happened to you in the last week or two. President decided to visit our Ward yesterday and it was the perfect day. We have all been fasting, too, and our Bishop is the best, not to mention our ward mission leader, also. The ward split a couple weeks back, as you know, and we had 120 people in Church. Yesterday we had 198 people in Church. Our less-active members are coming back and the Ward is growing a lot here.
10. Tell me the very best experience you have had in this last week. That was probably the best experience I have had this week, on Sunday.
Side Note: Aneeqa, Ryjel, and myself felt we should fast for Ian, and the people in his new area, yesterday as well. We felt inspired to do this, so the three of us did this together. We had not talked with Ian beforehand and did not know he was doing the same. We broke our fast yesterday with a special prayer among the three of us. This was a really great experience and a true testimony that there are "no coincidences." Neat, huh???
I had some pictures to send, but I’ll just share this with you anyway. I studied one day and put my notes on a sticky note attached to the picture of Christ you sent me. It has the following scriptures for you to study.
Alma 34:8-10
Gen. 3
Alma 42:2-10
Moses 5:10-13
Hebrews 5:9
Alma 34:15-16
It’s really interesting because it is all about the atonement and the fall. If someone can understand the Fall of Adam and Eve from the presence of God they can understand why Christ is so important. I know that if you can study these scriptures and ponder them you will receive more knowledge about why EVERYONE one day has to accept Christ as their Savior. It says “every knee shall bow and confess that he is the Christ.”
I got to head out now. We are going to have an activity in the Church. We are watching a movie, Ephraim’s Rescue, or something. Anything else really quick?
Love,
Elder Ian Hansgen

We are having great success with the less-actives and inactives in our area. We are finding people that aren't on the Ward list because they have attended other wards, or have moved. The other day we were in a street and we decided to follow a truck to help a man with the things he had in the back. When we arrived they said that some of them were members, but they had not been to church in 10 years. The Father and Mother aren't members, but two of the daughters are. We were 100% guided by the Spirit, and this wasn't the only time. There are also two more inactive families that we are working with. We have many appointments with members this week with our investigators, and with less-actives as well. We received a list of the members and the Bishop's wife helped us with which members are in our area.

** There were no pictures today. Elder Ian forgot the cable for his camera and could not upload any. **
Note: As many of you already know, Ian is the oldest child in our family. What some of you may not know is that he has two older "sisters" (cousins) whom he has looked up to and followed in their footsteps ever since birth. You may also not know that Ian is their only "brother" too. Jandy and Shelby have paved the way for their younger brother, and he has followed their "path" throughout his life. Ian even followed them by attending UCAS, in which Jandy and Shelby both attended and graduated from before him. Jandy was married last Fall, and Shelby will be married this upcoming July 17th. Much to Ian's disdain, he has had to bear the sheer misfortune of missing both of the weddings of these two girls. As such, here is a photo tribute to Ian and his two "older sisters." ♥

We Are Knocking On Doors...
Monday, June 30, 2014
Dear Family,
Well, this week there hasn’t been much. We are still working with a few less-active, or inactive, members and most of them have non-members in their house that we are teaching. The only problem is that we don’t have anyone coming to Church. They can’t be baptized if they don’t come.
The Carrillo family has made an interesting turn. The Dad got kicked out for being a drug addict, and now the Mom is all for baptizing her family. We gave the Dad a window of a month to get his act together, but I really think that what she did was the best thing to do. We shared the part about how it is better that one person falls instead of the whole family. He is dragging them down and won't progress.
Other than that we have been knocking on doors, which we should never have to do. We technically aren’t allowed to knock on doors, but it is the only way we can contact people.
The Bishop had an activity where we gathered together as members and missionaries in the third hour this Sunday and we were with all the members from our area. We set up a plan, and names of everyone, and are going to start working together. I was so happy and glad that our Bishop did this. It is really going to be great for the Ward.
Alright, talk to you next week. Bye.
Love,

Presidente,
Muchas Gracias presidente.

Our family of 4 baptisms is now 3 baptisms because the husband left. The wife said if he couldn't quit his addictions he couldn't live with the family. We felt that this was right as well. Elder Garibay shared the scripture about Laban and how it is better that one falls so that many more are saved.
Sister Ana Lugo also feels the Spirit very strong in her house now. We gave her a blessing, and now every time we visit she tells us about a new experience with the Holy Ghost.
Our Bishop helped us on Sunday when everyone met together during the last hour and we separated into the areas that we cover as missionaries. After this, we created a list of all the less-actives and investigators, and assigned the members to come out on a visit with us. This week we have a lot to do and we are very excited for the new people we are going to meet.
Thank you very much President.

Muchas Gracias presidente.

President,
This week was really good. Our Bishop has helped us a lot this Sunday. We are finding more people to teach and everything is progressing.

It's A Dog-Eat-Dog World -- Literally!
June 23, 2014
Dear Family,
This week was not really full of too many highlights. We basically have been on our bikes out in the middle of nowhere. We saw some vultures eating a dog and rode our bikes down a big dirt hill. We found out this week that in some places of our area there are dogs that attack bikes and try to bite your legs. We drilled out our handlebars and have reeds, or branches, to whip them with.
We have created our own "dog formation" while riding our bikes because they chase our wheels. They bark and attack the tire, and sometimes your leg. I haven’t been bit yet, but I got close. I actually broke my stick on the face of one dog. We had two or three experiences where they ran out at us, like 5 or 6 dogs, and they all just started 'freaking out.' So, now I am 'right-handed,' and my companion is 'left-handed,' so we get close, pull out the branches, and start hitting the dogs when they get too close.
We also found some (spinning) Tops or “Trompos.” They are the kind that Dad had in Pakistan when he was little, only these ones are made of plastic. I can already throw it into my hand and have it spinning.
This week we found some new less-active families that have at least one investigator in each family. We decided to start working with them a little bit more because it seems that every investigator that we have has something impeding them from progressing. So, while we are fixing their little problems, we are also working with them. One guy (the father) lives in the US and has two identities. He had a cousin die young when he was born and the system in Mexico is a little strange, so he was able to get away with having two identities. He is one person over there, and a different one here. It’s kind of funny because his oldest daughter doesn’t have the benefit to go to the US, but everyone else can. It’s weird.
It rained a lot here this week. We were sprinkled on every night like a mist. Once during the day, on Thursday, it just dumped water for about 20 minutes. The funny thing is that we went to our area and it was completely dry. The rain didn’t pass over there.
That’s just about it for this week. Nothing else new.
Love,
Elder Ian Hansgen

Presidente,
Muchas gracias Presidente.

This week we have worked with the less-actives and our investigators almost equally. We have new investigators in every family as well. The daughter of one family wants to be baptized and the family wants to become active.
We are having problems with an investigator and want your opinion on her situation. There is a Tarahumara (Indian) sister that Elder Oldham baptized a few weeks ago. She has gone to the Sierra with you a few times. She was separated from her husband that she isn't married to, and recently she has returned and lives with him. Now they no longer live the law of chastity and we have explained about marriage to them, and they do not want to get married. We still want to visit them but, at the same time, we don't see it producing any fruits.
Our focus is on contacting many people and finding more people to teach this week. Our area is huge and many times there aren’t people in the streets, but we receive many blessings from the references we do receive.
Thank you very much President.

It's Still Really Hot Here...
Monday, June 16, 2014
Dear Family,
Well, this week was a little boring. It had some cool stuff happen but, basically, we have just been avoiding the sun and riding bikes.
We met some new investigators and gave a blessing to their house. They have been having some strange things happen to their house and some of the photos they have taken have weird stuff in them.
We are reactivating a less-active family. We met with them and they already want to meet with the Bishop. They trust us a lot and so we are helping them out.
All of Chihuahua has had interviews with President Chavez and it's normal. We have them every three months. That's why President Chavez called you because he asked me how you were doing. I told him that you were doing alright, and he asked me if he has ever called you before. I said "yeah," but he asked me when. So, he decided to call you right then and there.
Our "Sabbath Day" guy is super funny. He prays for an answer to see if what we are teaching is true so he can share the Book of Mormon with his church, and then they can start reading it. I'm positive that if he gets an answer and does that they will kick him out, and then we can baptize him. Ha-ha-ha...
Other than that, we have a new rule that we have to be indoors from 3:00 to 4:30 to study, rest, and get out of the heat. So, a little bit of our time has been taken, so we haven't visited as many people this week.
I got to go now.
Love,
Elder Hansgen
Other Information: Regarding a question about the native Tarahumara Indian Tribes in the Chihuahua region where Elder Hansgen is currently serving he has told me the following: “Yeah, actually they are all over. They are the ones who dress in the traditional style of clothing; the nice dresses with a lot of colors.” (The “Tarahumara” family he has been referring to are Tarahumara Indians, and descendants of this very ancient tribe).

"Thank You" Phone Call (Unexptected)
Wednesday, June 11, 2014
Today (Wednesday) I received a most unexpected, and most welcome, telephone call from President Chavez. When he told me who he was, though, I have to admit my heart instantly sank and started racing extremely fast. I sat and listened to what he was saying to me while waiting for him to deliver the "bad news." I kept thinking to myself that something had happened and that our Elder was in a hospital...
President Chavez called just to say "thank you" for "raising such a good son" and to say "we know it is because of you that he is such a good missionary" and "thank you for your hard work in raising such a good son" and for "teaching him."
Wow, can you believe this???
I became impatient and interrupted him because I couldn't wait any longer for the "bad news," thinking something had to be wrong the whole time, and when I said "Is my son okay?" he simply replied, "Yes -- he is doing really well. Your son has a really large heart and cares so much for the people of Mexico, and they love him, too. He is very sincere and this means a lot to me because these are my people and he loves them. He is a good missionary and very humble." He told me he is very grateful to have our Elder serving in his mission.
He said many other "glowing" things about Elder Hansgen and also said "your son has a very nice Mexican accent" to which I chuckled (because I noticed this myself during our Mother's Day Skype). We told Ian he had an accent, via Skype, but he is in denial and does not believe us.
It was fantastic to receive this phone call and it completely made my day. I have never heard of a Mission President calling a mother just to thank her, and for no other reason. I welcome this type of phone call any day, though. It's always nice to hear your kids are doing great things. Talk about going the extra mile!
I thanked him, too, for everything he and Sister Chavez have done for our Elder. Elder Hansgen loves President Chavez very much and really looks up to him. They have both been so good to him and he is really lucky to be under their care.
Receiving this phone call meant a lot to me, too. I love my Elder very dearly -- there's nothing I wouldn't do for him.

We Are Sleeping Outside Now...
Monday, June 9, 2014
Dear Family,
We finally have a full P-Day to ourselves today!!!
Questions and Answers:
1) How do you do your laundry in your new area? We have a washer in our house.
2) Please give me an update on Maria Elena, her mother, and her daughters (Alejandra and Diana). We haven’t been able to find time with her to actually visit her.
3) I have no idea how many people (one or more) you were given by Magdalena, but how are things coming along with Magdalena, and how are things coming along with the reference(s)??? Magdalena is alright. She still hasn’t come to Church. Her references are super cool, but they can’t really come to Church either.
4) I am really interested to hear how things are coming along with your "Sabbath Day" guy. How is that going??? He still wants to meet with us, but he has a lot of fear to leave the beliefs he has, even when we present him with the truth. I think little by little it will start to work.
5) Lastly, how about the father of the "Tarahumara" Family? Can you give me an update? Well, we found out yesterday that they aren’t married and they just moved back together, so now his spouse (the mother) should not be taking the Sacrament, and we have to find a way to get them married or he can’t be baptized.
6) Do you guys wear helmets when you ride your bikes? We don’t because we are in the middle of no-mans land.
7) What was the best thing, or experience, you did/had this week? We had two more Elders move in with us, Elder Woods and Elder Mainasas. They decided to open another area without looking for a house, or even preparing the way for them to open an area; so, for now, there are six of us in the same house. It’s alright, and also a little crazy sometimes.
Can you send me my electric razor? Sometimes the water doesn’t come to the house so I can’t shave.
We always buy big tanks of water to drink from. We are definitely not allowed to drink the tap water. It’s only in our area that the water tower drops the water in the morning but, for some reason the past couple of days, it hasn’t been dropping water, or there is just no pressure. I shower everyday, even if only a tiny bit comes out.
Elder Garibay and I live with Elder Hiskey, Elder Brown, Elder Woods, and Elder Mainasa. I met Elder Woods when I was in Delicias. He is from Idaho. Elder Brown is from Arizona, right by lake Powell.
If I were you guys I would really review, as a family, the talk from this last Conference from sister Linda S. Reeves. Not so much about the pornography, but the promise that she says about Family Home Evening and study in the home. There was another talk from Elder Ballard, too, in the first session I would suggest.
We are all sleeping outside now because it’s so hot. We just decided to move them all outside last night. I took a photo before anyone had made their beds. I bought a hammock a while back while I was in Camargo. I am also sending the photos of our bikes. We are the only Elders allowed to have bikes in the city of Chihuahua, and it’s because of our area.
There are also a bunch of photos of the little book I made of personal references. They are basically just little definitions of the scripture reference. I don’t know if you would like to study them, but this is something I made. I’m going to send the old one I had in the package I still have to send.
I'll talk to you next week. I have to leave to go buy food now. Bye!
Love,
-Elder Hansgen

I'm Doing Fantastic - We Finally Got Some Bikes!
Monday, June 2, 2014
Dear Family,
Monday- We basically did nothing because we had meetings and our P-Day. We asked for bikes this day...again.
Tuesday- We did service with the Zone Leaders and the Hermanas for one of their investigators. We cleaned out the house of someone who died, I think, because this was THE WORST house I have ever seen in my life. The kitchen was the worst part to clean. It was just covered with dead mice and poop. I don’t know when the last time was that you watched the Series Of Unfortunate Events movie with Jim Carrey, but the house was like that one.
Wednesday- We received authorization to buy bikes, so the first thing we did was find some, then fix my tire because it had like 9 patches. (Yes -- we bought some bikes and our legs are killing us. We have been all over. It is so much better to have bikes in the misión.) We also visited the guy who I taught who is the Sabbath-Day (similar to a Jehovah’s Wittness) guy. He actually did a 180 and is now listening to us. He doesn’t want to come to church yet, but he understands the Book of Mormon and why we are there.
The picture taken from the bus is my area (La Puerta de Chihuahua). It’s a desert and we are biking it all. We cover the Colonias 11 de Febrero and everything else below the Street R. Aldama until you hit the Street Francisco Portillo. We go all the way back into the Mountains. It’s just a huge desert.
Thursday- We went up the canyon in one of the mountains to have another service activity that took up our whole day. The Hermana we were serving is less-active because of the distance and her work. She works in the Prison in Elder Oldham’s área. We ate with her afterward, then hiked the small hill behind her house.
Friday- We fixed up the bikes again and worked the whole day with them. By the end of the day our butts and thighs really hurt. I sweat so much here, too. I could wipe my face, look in the mirror, and just see the sweat coming out again. So, I took a shower, ate some ice cream, and then drank a whole 2 liters of wáter. I didn't think it was possible for me to be able to fit that much water in me.
Saturday- We just basically worked with our bikes again. Elder Oldham baptized a Tarahumara family and the dad works in our area, so he is going to be our investigator. We went clear out to the end of the world to meet him. He lives at the end of the Street San Luiz. He owns a ranch called Rancho K-Pricho. He has more than 300 pigs and goats. We couldn’t have done it without bikes.
Sunday- The Ward is so big that the Stake President came in and split up the Ward. Barrio (Ward) Mármol and Villa Juarez exchanged and changed their boundaries. It didn’t really affect us much -- hardly at all. Also, we gave a blessing.

Presidente,

President,
This week has been one of the best weeks of my mission. I am very excited for the people we have to visit. With bicycles, it is very east to go to our appointments.
We did service two times this week. The first time was for a Sister's investigator when we helped them clean her house. The second time we went to the mountains for a less-active sister. She fed us and we hiked up a hill. It was really good.
When we bought our bikes, we fixed them and we started to work with them. It is much beter now for our area. One of our investigators is the owner of the K-Pricho Ranch, and it is a long way out in our area. We can only get there on our bikes.
On Sunday, the Stake President announced that the Ward would be splitting. Now our boundries have changed.
Thank you very much for everything, President.

It Has Been A Really Great Week Here In Chihuahua!
Monday, May 26, 2014
Dear Family,
We have to go to ANOTHER activity today. We haven’t really been given time to settle in all that much. I think that after today we should be fine, though.
We might get some bikes this week. I also bought a hat.
Monday- Well, we started off pretty good, actually. We bought hats and stuff for our area. We went to an activity and then started working in our area.
Tuesday- We found this lady who is just super awesome. It was completely guided by the Spirit. We were knocking a door on Sunday and a girl, Alejandra, passed by and told us nobody was home. We thought nothing of it and just told her “thanks” but decided to ask her where she lived, and if we could visit them. She said “where” and told us “when,” so we came back on Tuesday. We knocked on the door and her older sister, Diana, answered. She told us her mom (Maria Elena) was over at their Grandmother’s house across the street, so we went over there to talk to her. She answered and was super interested in us. There was something (the Spirit) that just caught her attention. She asked us for the Church’s website and told us to stop by on Thursday. So, then we went to go visit this Sabbath Day Church (Adventista del Septimo Dia) guy, Manuel (similar to Jehovah’s Witnesses). I was able to actually find a spot in our conversation to talk because he just wanted to tell us all about how important this commandment is, so I said to him "and so?" and then just went off (not in a bad way) on him. I told him all about how it is the Jewish tradition on Saturday, and how it has changed to Sunday with scriptural evidence, and we ended up teaching him all about the Book of Mormon and the restored Church. It was just like teaching anyone else, except I had to prove every little thing I said. By the end he asked me what Bible we used, and I showed him that it was the same because he didn’t believe me. He told us he would read the Book of Mormon, and pray, but he also wants to talk to his preacher.
Wednesday- We were visiting one of the only members that we have in our area, and she is actually less active. Magdalena is her name, and she gave us a reference. Shortly after this, her ‘reference’ arrived at her store and we just decided to have the lesson right there. It was pretty good. The lady (reference) has been waiting for the missionaries to go and visit her for a while.
Thursday- We returned to visit the lady that was super interested, Maria Elena, and had one of the best lessons, if not the best, I have had while on my mission. She led the whole thing with one of the pamphlets we gave her about the restoration. The Spirit was there, and she even told us this herself. We answered all the questions she had, and it really was an experience like DC 50:13-22. (Look it up its great).
Friday- Just a normal day trying to get to know our area and preparing it.
Saturday- We were invited to go to Camargo and baptize people. I got to go back to Camargo to baptize Cecilia and Natividad. We got there early and visited Hermana Gonzales. She was super surprised to see me and said some really nice things about the work I had there. She also told me about the situation in Camargo and how the work from Elder Ante and I was superb. The baptism was great. I got to baptize Cecilia and Natividad. There were a few problems with the water, but it all went well. It was super hot, but we fixed it. Cecilia was super emotional about the whole thing and it was really Spiritual with her. Natividad was extremely happy that I was able to make it back for their Baptism.
(Re-cap on Cecilia and Natvidad: Monday, April 28, 2014: Cecilia and her husband, Natividad, are a couple that we are visiting. The brother of Cecilia is a member, and he is the High Priest Group Leader, but he really doesn't have a testimony either. All he does is read directly from the manuals and, for talks in Church, he reads from "Gospel Principles." Anyway, Natividad didn't come to Church this week, so we went to visit them to see how he is doing. He had a bad leg that morning. We gave him a blessing and he stood up and was walking around the room again. Cecilia came to Church and is really ready to be baptized. She already has a strong testimony. Surprisingly, she is receiving help from the members in the Relief Society.)
Sunday- Just a normal day. We went to visit everyone we know to invite them to church at 12:00 and the one person we didn’t visit came, so that was really good. The rest of the day everyone was not at home, or drunk.
That is our week. It was super great, and we have had a ton of Spiritual experiences this week.
We have to go now because we should be in the Church for the activity. Personally, I think that they are asking too much of our time for these activities. We have stuff to do, and are almost done with everything in the house that we just don’t have time for, but it’s alright for now.
Love,

We went to Carmargo on Saturday for some baptisms and it was fantastic. We visited a less active as well when we made it there early. Thank you so much for giving us permission to go to Carmargo and support those converts.
We have found a few people by the Spirit in our area this week. We had a wonderful lesson with one of them. She had golden questions, and also was listening to the whisperings of the Spirit during the whole lesson. It was fantastic.

First Week in Chihuahua:

QA Session
I asked if he has any pictures to send to us. His response was “I have a few and I want to get some more before I send them. We are still settling in the house so I haven’t taken any pictures of our house, or with my companion.”
I asked what happened to the other Elders in Camargo on transfer day. His response was “as far as I know, Elder Ante is still in Camargo. Elder Warner, Elder Vazquez, and Elder Vergara are still in Camargo. Elder Romero (Ian’s former companion) went to La Sierra. They closed our area (the area Ian was serving in) in Camargo.
I asked how many areas there are in Villa Juarez. His response was “There are 10 missionaries in our Ward. The area is big and covers a large area. Villa Juarez 5 (our area) is on one of the outer edges of Chihuahua and is mostly just land and dirt.”
I asked him about his companion, Elder Garibay. His response was “My companion is from the Ciudad de Mexico, but also from Michoacan. He is 25 (years old) and actually is super prepared to work. We have a lot in common and actually have been fine together. It’s definitely different than being with Elder Romero. Elder Garibay just got here last Monday. I am training him."
I asked about his “Escogito” family of five from Camargo; I wanted to know how they were doing. His response was “They started going inactive because they don’t have means to get to the Church and nobody started to befriend them. I am also starting to think that they fell back into some temptations."
He really didn’t have much else to say. He didn’t have much time and also had to leave to go and get a haircut. He did not forward along what he wrote to his Mission President either.
I’m sure next week he will have plenty to say and tell us about.

It's Big City Time - I'm Here In Chihuahua:
Tuesday, May 13, 2014
Hey Mom,
I’m writing you from a different area. I want to get more photos to send you this week because there aren’t really that many.
I got changed to Villa Juarez 5 (five). I got a new companion, Elder Garibay, and it’s great. We both have a ton in common and we get to open up a completely new area. We started out with a new area book and we are learning the area and getting to know the members little by little. I think that by the end of this week we will be all settled in and have everything in order. At least that’s how it was with Elder Wiscombe when we opened up the new area in Delicias.
I was ready to just light a match on Camargo and just get out of there. I feel really bad for the Ward, but also about all the people that we were really helping. There were just too many negative influences for me and, you are right, I was ready for something new.
Villa Juarez is the same ward as Elder Oldham. It’s a great Ward from what I have heard and we should have a lot of success here. I am just happy because when I started to get to know my new companion I learned that we both have the same ideas about a lot of the things we are doing. We are going to make this new area shine. I really like the opportunity to just start from ground zero. We have absolutely nothing right now. We had to make our own area book and we have to get to know our area. We live in a house with two other Elders; Elder Hiskey and Elder Rojas. We are doing divisions with them for the first week and then we get to start on our own.
It was really nice to receive a surprise call from you, especially after I thought that I wasn’t going to be able to talk to you anymore.
I don’t have much time to actually type today because it isn’t our P-day, so I’ll talk to you next Monday. Have a ton of questions ready for me.
Love,
Elder Hansgen
